How does heartburn happen?

Heartburn occurs when acid rises up from the stomach into the oesophagus and irritates and inflames delicate tissues. It usually occurs after eating; people feel a burning sensation in the chest, which often feels worse if you lie down or bend over. Fatty food, acidic food, alcohol or coffee are common triggers.

What can I do to prevent heartburn?

There are many small changes you can make to your lifestyle, according to what may be triggering your heartburn. For a start, eat smaller meals, and eat slowly. Know what foods and drinks trigger heartburn for you: common culprits are those high in fat or high in acid, including citrus fruits and tomato-based foods, as well as spicy foods, carbonated drinks, fried food, alcohol and coffee. Drink plenty of water between meals (and less fluid actually with your meals). Lose weight and quit smoking if applicable (smoking can weaken the lower oesophagus, making it more likely to let acid rise up). Don’t lie down after eating. If you suffer from night time heartburn, don’t eat or drink for two to three hours before bed time, and try raising the head of your bed 15-20cm.
